Somanna is a PhD candidate working with the genome of clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to identify drug-resistant mutations, and also studying the expression pattern of stress associated genes in drug-resistant strains.

She is doing her PhD work in the lab. She is mainly interested in genomics of raciation and how chromosomal fusion influences it. She is using the nasuta-albomicans complex of Drosophila as a study model wherein 3rd autosome and sex chromosomes exist in both independent and fused state.
